Notes on the Infinite

The orbits of the Earth and Venus are approximately 8:13, which are two consecutive Fibonacci Numbers and their ratio is approximately the Golden Ratio which along with Fractal Geometry is the foundation of all design in Nature.

When one diagrams the orbits of the two planets you get this image. A very old and ancient image. There are no accidents at this cosmic scale. Only signposts for all of us, pointing to the Infinite.

Notes on the Infinite

Most photographers don’t spend a lot of time thinking about constructing an image. Good painters on the other hand spend a great deal of time planning, sketching and sweating the composition and in Disiderio’s case meaning. For me this is what separates the realist painters; How they think about and express meaning in their imagery.  Vincent Desiderio is a great example of the amount of shear work, toil, sweat and thought that goes into the creation of one of his works.

Nice to see Funk has a new champion! If you like pure “white folk” funk – it don’t get much better than this! Turkuaz a really excellent band based in Brooklyn NY is coming to Ardmore PA, in October.  I hope we can fit everybody in there!

Nelson Shanks 1937-2015

One  of our country’s greatest portrait painters passed away recently. Nelson Shanks was also Philadelphia’s own. Students came from all over the world to attend his school which was just a block around the corner from me.  A monumental mind with a monumental talent who touched everyone from dignitaries to students throughout his life. This self portrait was one of his last apparently.

There is no obituary that can possibly capture this man.  Here are a few that make a good attempt:

The late and great Sarah Charlesworth has been mentioned in this blog recently. Regrettably I just realized she passed away suddenly on June 25th.  The New York Times has a nice piece remembering her here that is well worth the read.

She is especially worth noting again regarding her major retrospective at the New Museum in New York. Not to be missed and a glorious final tribute to a remarkable photographic artist.
